Let’s hope the rebound on this first trading day of the second half proves to be a harbinger for the full year. On Monday, stocks spent the morning and early afternoon solidly on the negative side, but a late-session surge made sure the Big 3 finished in the green. It was a reassuring beginning to the back half of 2018 after such a sluggish first half, which included a nearly 2% drop for the Dow amid swirling trade war fears. Speaking of the Dow, it was off by almost 200 points at its worst today. When all was said and done though, it fought back to gain 0.15% (or nearly 36 points) to 24307.2. The S&P took the same course on Monday and managed a 0.31% increase to 2726.7. A strong day for good old tech facilitated this turnaround. As a result, the NASDAQ soared back for a 0.76% rise to 7567.7. It may not feel like it given all the volatility (especially on Friday), but the three major indices are actually on three-day winning streaks. The Russell 2000 came along for the ride as well and closed higher by 0.73% to 1655.1. This will be an interesting week for the market. The trade turmoil doesn't look like it will end anytime soon. At the same time, the Fourth of July comes right in the middle of the week. The market is closed on Wednesday and many investors will take some extra time off, as will some of the editors. The portfolios were active today though as Momentum Trader cashed in a pair of double-digit winners while Black Box Trader swapped out two names. Also, the Zacks Top 10 Stocks portfolio made a rare couple of trades to begin the second half. Read the full write up below for specifics on these moves and more: Today's Portfolio Highlights: Momentum Trader: Shares of Axon Enterprises (AAXN) have been moving mostly sideways of late. However, since being added in late March, this conducted electrical weapons company (formerly known as TASER) has gained 64.4%. Dave decided to sell the name on Monday and take that profit to the bank. The editor also sold half of Natural Grocers (NGVC) for a 13.9% return. He thinks there’s more upside for this specialty retailer of natural and organic groceries…but doesn’t want to keep a full position on the books. Dave now has more room in the portfolio to make moves later this week. Black Box Trader: This week’s adjustment included only two swaps. The portfolio sold Santander Consumer USA (SC) and Textron Inc. (TXT). These names were replaced with the additions of Devon Energy (DVN) and HD Supply Holdings (HDS). Zacks Top 10 Stocks: You’re probably not accustomed to changes in this portfolio, since the holdings are designed to stay for an entire year. But that’s not set in stone. Sheraz can make changes anytime he wants, and he decided to swap two names as we start the second half. The editor sold Oracle (ORCL) and Aqua America (WTR). The new buys are B2B payments company Bottomline Technologies (EPAY) and cybersecurity firm Proofpoint (PFPT). The portfolio has already returned more than 19.5% through May of this year, compared to a 1.2% gain for the S&P. With these new picks, the editor is hoping for an even better back half of 2018. Zacks Confidential: The pros LOVE to see a good pullback, but most investors have to guess about how low it will go and when to jump in.
