The virus - covid-19 as it is now called among us (who knows what it will be called in a year) - is not as lethal or as virulent as previous corona virus 'flash epidemics" like SARs or MERs. The virus is more insidious with reports of an incubation period as long as 14 days. So can you remember who's hand you shook 10 or 11 days ago? Which door knob or door handle you grabbed without washing you hands before rubbing your eyes, scratching an itchy nose, or wiping your mouth? If everyone you know is fine today is no guarantee we don't have our own N. American epidemic in the works...and we likely do. There are no absolute protections from any form of corona virus - we have had the common cold for millennia, the same old cautions still hold true. Wash your hands. Sneeze into your elbow (inside sleeve) or use a handkerchief or tissue. If you are sick, limit your contact with others knowing full well that you may have been contagious with whatever you have for the previous 10-14 days....so try not to spread anything beyond necessary! The people you love always get the illness from you..... You want a mask to filter the infectious particles? Good luck on that. I've been fitted for proper fit of the N-95 mask and it is a chore to wear. Almost any other mask is just going to make you look unique - and in medicine, you do not want to be unique - especially due to something that is not effective! Lastly, it seems to hit men harder than women, the pneumonia symptoms progress rapidly even though you have been contagious and growing the virus for more than a few days prior to your symptoms' appearance. The death rates are not up to 10%, and with our current surveillance our (U.S.A.) death rates are well less than the 4% that has been stated regarding the initial epidemic population. For reference, the Spanish Flu (which was not Spanish in origin, just publicized first in the Spanish newspapers which weren't under war-time censorship) had approximately 5% of the world population in deaths, and a 25% infection rate. I personally believe it to be more in the 20% of the population infection rate since there were famines and WWI generated societal stress (like our markets are causing us today) along with poor sanitation in the war torn areas contributing to the 1919 death rates. This is finally a pandemic (infections on two continents growing at the 'organic' rate) and although not as lethal as the current influenza season, it seems to strike more fear than anything else. C'mon, it is a really bad flu! That is all it is. A Novel, Really Bad Flu! A pneumonia you don't want to have! And what kills you with a pneumonia if you don't succumb to a secondary bacterial infection from the initial virus is YOUR ROBUST IMMUNE RESPONSE! Yes, your body kills you! Drink water. Wash your hands, Quit looking at stressors like the indexes, stick close to your family and try not to travel. Use anti-viral wipes on everything you touch regularly - your steering wheel, your door knobs, your keyboard, your phone, and for heaven sake, we should all be carrying handkerchiefs even though I am one who grew up hating them! Along with handkerchiefs, purchase some anti-viral wipes....no need to do anything more than take good care of yourself until you need to be seen by a health care provider. Be safe, when this has passed, we can get on to betting on the market!via a user.
