Southwest Airlines Cutting Fuel Costs By Adding New Winglets To Their Aircrafts

Southwest Airlines is adding new split scimitar winglets for 85 of their air crafts in a move that could save the company close to $14 million in annual fuel costs. The attachments are manufactured by Boeing and they cut drag and improve aerodynamics. They are a step above blended winglets. Boeing will put the winglets on 52 Boeing 737-800s, 33 other 737-800's will be retrofitted with the wings when you are delivered later on in 2014. The airlines said the wings will cut fuel cots by 5% a 2% improvement over the blended winglets.
