Consumers might not be up to the job of carrying the U.S. economy

Spending off to slow start in early 2015. What gives?

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — The U.S. economy is adding jobs at the fastest clip since the end of the last century, but Americans sure aren’t shopping like it’s 1999.

Sales at U.S. retail stores fell in January for the second straight month, and even if gasoline purchases are stripped out, consumers aren’t exactly ringing up the cash registers.
