Netflix will pay $1.75 million an episode for ‘Gotham’ before it even premieres

Netflix has secured an unprecedented global licensing deal with Time Warner Inc.’sWarner Bros. to stream “Gotham,” a Fox drama series that hasn’t yet aired.

Deadline reports the deal would amount to about $1.75 million per episode. The Batman prequel debuts on Sept. 22 on Fox, and under the pact, Netflix NFLX  will have the exclusive rights to offer the show on demand worldwide after the first season is broadcast. “Gotham” would likely be available to Netflix subscribers in September 2015.

The deal unfolded after the “Gotham” pilot garnered positive reaction in May at L.A. Screenings, an event for international TV program buyers, Deadline reports. Variety says rivals Hulu and Amazon AMZN +0.59% were also bidding alongside Netflix, possibly driving up the deal’s worth.

Netflix has been aggressively pushing to obtain rights to high-quality content to accompany its original programming. Last week it acquired NBC drama “The Blacklist” for $2 million per episode. And, similar to the “Gotham” deal, Netflix will air the “Breaking Bad” prequel “Better Call Saul” when it finishes its run on AMC.

“Gotham” delves into the origin stories of Batman and other characters from the DC comic book series such as Commissioner Gordon, Catwoman, the Riddler and thePenguin. The cast features Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, Jada Pinkett Smith andSean Pertwee.
