Stocks Back in the Green in Choppy Session


Stocks clawed their way back into the green by late morning Wednesday, though disappointing earnings from Coca-Cola (KO - Get Report) continued to pressure the consumer staples sector and broader market.

The S&P 500 was up 0.16%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.2%, and the Nasdaq added 0.35%.

Coca-Cola reported a weaker quarter as currency headwinds continued to pressure revenue. The beverage giant reported a 4% decline in sales to $10.28 billion, falling short of forecasts of $10.29 billion. Global unit case volume rose 2%. Shares fell nearly 5%, while the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLP) fell 0.9%.

Sales of homes already built climbed 5.1% in March to a seasonally-adjusted rate of 5.33 million as warmer weather and robust demand boosted activity in the housing sector. The increase was above expected 3.7% growth in existing home sales. The median existing home price climbed 5.7% to $222,700.
