Knock-offs include some features not even offered on the real Apple smartwatch Taobao.comAn advertisement for a copy of the upcoming Apple Watch, which appeared Thursday on Taobao. The widely anticipated Apple Watch is due to hit the Chinese market on April 24, but makers of imitation devices just couldn’t wait, and knock-offs are already available on Alibaba Group’s BABA, +0.60% Taobao.com, China’s largest e-commerce site. And they are evidently a huge hit. Among Thursday’s “hot items on sale” listed on Taobao was one device named the “AW08 watch,” which claimed to have “the same design as Apple’s iWatch,” referring to the speculated name of Apple Inc.’s AAPL, +0.36% smartwatch before the company officially announced the gadget earlier this week. In fact, if the ad is accurate, the AW08 has some functions not even offered on the actual Apple Watch, such as compatibility with Google Inc.’s GOOG, +0.09% Android operating system and a longer battery life. The image accompanying the ad for the AW08 — which is priced at 368 yuan ($59) — appears more or less identical to the newly released Apple device, with a cluster of apps displayed on the home screen, and both a knob and button located to the right of the watch face. It has four colors to choose from, even including a 18-karat-gold-case version with an orange-leather strap and stainless steel clasp, an apparent homage to the “Edition” Apple Watch that carries a U.S. retail price of $10,000-$17,000. The ad said the AW08 watch can run for up to 120 hours, works with both Android and Apple’s native iOS, and allows users to customize the interface for time display or app presentation. The watch can be sent via next-day delivery from the southeastern city of Shenzhen to anywhere in China, the ad said. Laura He
