Infineon OPTIGA TPM Chip to be Used in Lenovo's ThinkPad

Germany-based semiconductor maker Infineon Technologies AG IFNNY recently announced that its OPTIGA TPM (Trusted Platform Module) chips will be used in the new Lenovo ThinkPad notebooks.

Lenovo will be able to offer a complete solution to the networking and data security issues by leveraging OPTIGA TPM products. These highly advanced chips are designed to protect confidentiality, integrity and authenticity of information and devices across a large platform.

Infineon’s OPTIGA product family provides various levels of security for electronic systems. It ranges from complex IT-infrastructure with multiple servers and computers to single systems with device and associated accessories. These security chips authenticate the individual elements of a system. To meet the varying security requirements, Infineon offers different products such as OPTIGA TPM to protect system integrity of connected devices and IT networks, and OPTIGA Trust to detect pirated electronic components and replacement parts.

Lenovo is a leading provider of computers, with a vast global network base and has sold over 100 million ThinkPad notebooks. Thus, the collaboration will help Infineon to expand its customer base and the rising popularity of these notebooks should aid revenues.

Infineon’s Secure Element (eSE) chips are used in Lenovo’s X3 and Vibe P1 smartphones, which ensure secure online payments and mobile ticketing, especially for public transport. The new deal will strengthen the ties between the two companies further.

According to a market research report by IHS, the total market volume for embedded security solutions is expected to increase from 1.36 billion units in 2015 to nearly 2 billion units in 2020, driven by the Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Per a report published in 2014, the research firm acknowledged Infineon as a leading embedded security solution provider.

Infineon also provides technological assistance to industry giants such as Microsoft Corporation MSFT, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company HPE and Samsung.

Infineon carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). A better-ranked stock in the industry is Himax Technologies, Inc. HIMX which sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
