(Image source: wendy.com) If congress doesn’t renew the $500 billion Farm Bill by the end of the year it could send the price for a gallon of milk significantly higher. The debate around the Farm Bill has been mired in the food stamp fight between Republicans and Democrats. The Republicans are proposing deep cuts to the food stamp program, which has grown substantially over the last five years as a result of the great recession. On the other hand, Democrats don’t want the level of spending cuts that the Republicans are proposing for the program. All of this fighting is keeping the Farm Bill from passing. If the bill doesn’t get pass by January 1st, the Farm Bill will revert back to the 1949 laws, which would triple by fourfold what the government pays for dairy products. As a result, the increase will be transferred onto the common folks.
