Alphabet's 'Other Bets' Businesses Are Quietly Undergoing Some Major Changes

Alphabet (GOOGL) is seeing major executive shakeups in its moonshot-filled "Other Bets" reporting segment, as well as some head-turning strategic moves. It's probably not a coincidence that the Google parent company has been trying to increase accountability for the segment, and ultimately narrow its big losses.

Re/code reported Wednesday that Bill Maris, the head of Alphabet's venture capital arm -- it's known as Google Ventures, and managed upwards of $2.4 billion as of last year -- will be leaving on Friday after having run the unit since its 2009 founding. David Krane, a managing partner at Ventures, will replace Maris.

Maris' departure follows the recent news that Chris Urmson, the chief technology officer for Alphabet's self-driving car unit, is leaving, as are two other engineering execs working on the project. Urmson was reportedly at odds with John Krafcik, the former Hyundai USA CEO hired last year to head Google's self-driving car efforts.
