Kansas City Southern KSU reported first-quarter 2016 earnings (on an adjusted basis) of $1.03 per share, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 97 cents.Including special items, the Kansas City, MO-based railroad operator reported earnings of 99 cents per share in the first quarter of 2016, up 9.9% year over year.Total revenue came in at $562.7 million, down 6.7% year over year and also below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $564 million. The year-over-year decline can be primarily attributed to a 37% drop in revenues at the Energy segment.In the reported quarter, operating income came in at $187.9 million, up 5.4% year over year. Meanwhile, operating ratio stood at 66.6% as against 70.5% in the year-ago quarter. Carload volumes for the period were 5% lower than the figure recorded in the last-year quarter.Segment ResultsThe Chemical & Petroleum segment contributed $117.3 million to revenues, up 2% year over year. Also, volumes improved 3% year over year.The Industrial & Consumer Products generated revenues of $141.4 million, down 3% year over year. However, Business volumes increased 1% while revenues per carload declined 4% from the prior-year quarter.The Agriculture & Minerals segment’s revenues totaled $110 million, up 4% year over year. On a year-over-year basis, business volumes improved 4% while revenues per carload were flat on a year-over-year basis.The Energy segment generated $42 million in revenues, down 37% year over year. Below par performances of Frac Sand apart from coal & petroleum coke hurt the results at the segment. Business volumes dropped 16% year over year and revenues per carload also deteriorated 25%.Intermodal revenues were $85.1 million, down 10% year over year. Business volumes dropped 7% while revenues per carload fell 3% year over year.The Automotive segment accounted for $41 million of the total revenue, down 25% year over year. Business volumes also fell 12% year over year and revenues per carload dropped 14%.Meanwhile, Other revenues totaled $25.9 million, an increase of 25% year over year.Kansas City Southern, which operates with railway operators like Canadian National Railway Company CNI, Norfolk Southern Corp.
