As of today, American Airlines has control over 24 takeoff as well as landing rights at New York's JFK airport. This came to be as a result of a swap with JetBlue Airways. JBLUE's side of the deal entails them receiving ownership of 16 slots at Reagan National Airport near Washington. Prior to now, the airlines had been leasing the slots to each other for the past few years. Southwest airlines and Virgin won some slots at LaGuardia that American gave up in this past year. After US Aiways merged with AMR to become American Airlines Group, they made an agreement with the US Justice Department to give up slots at major airports to avoid a monopoly. Now the world largest carrier, American will also give up spots in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, and Miami.
