Economic growth in the United States started off the year just about where it was at the end of the year: doing OK but still leaving something to be desired. This is in line with a mix of other recent economic data: job growth has accelerated, consumer confidence is up, lending seems to be getting easier but housing starts were down 2.0 percent in January and new applications for building permits were down 0.7 percent.
