The climax to March Madness – the NCAA men’s college basketball championship saw a nail-biting finish on Monday, when Villanova won over North Carolina, with a score of 77-74. However, the excitement was not mirrored in the number of viewers for the title game, which was rather disappointing as it made its debut on cable.Per media sources, this down-to-the-wire match generated an average rating of 10.6 on TBS, TNT, and truTV, which are owned by Turner Sports that in turn forms a segment of Time Warner Inc. TWX.The total number of viewers came in at nearly 17.8 million, marking a steep plunge of 37% from last season's Duke-Wisconsin match that tuned in roughly 28.3 million viewers, representing the biggest spectator strength in almost two decades. Further, the number of viewers for Monday’s NCAA championship game dropped about 16% from the UConn-Kentucky final in 2014.Sources revealed that the slump in viewership is attributable to the shift from network TV to cable for the first time. CBS Corporation CBS and Time Warner’s Turner Broadcasting had penned a 14-year $10.8 billion deal with NCAA back in 2010, to mutually telecast the game. While Time Warner’s TBS aired the first telecast this season, the title game will alternate between CBS and TBS hereafter. Notably, TBS exists in relatively fewer homes at present, compared to CBS.Nonetheless, Monday’s title game gathered the second-largest audience for a college basketball match on cable, following 22.6 million viewers for Wisconsin-Kentucky’s semifinals last year.Zacks RankTime Warner currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
