Singapore Food Stalls Become the First Street Vendors to Receive Michelin Stars

Last Thursday, Michelin Guides pinned its prestigious stars on 29 dining establishments in Singapore including two “hawker” food stalls: Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle, and Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle. The pair have become the first street food vendors in the world to be given a rating by the French company. Singapore was also honored as the first Southeast Asian country and the fourth in Asia to be mentioned in the annual guide book. The recognition becomes even more impressive after having learned that these vendors were handpicked from over 6,000 stalls in the country who sell only the most delectable and local cuisine.

“I am very excited. Never knew hawker food can go global,” says Chan Hon Meng, owner of Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle. “Hopefully the next generation will also pick this up.” If you’re ever in the country drop by Meng’s stall where you can cop a tasty chicken and rice dish for as little as $1.85 USD per plate.
