The public universities that spend the most on their athletic programs are allocating more to financial aid for students and less to compensation for coaches. Those are among the findings in USA Today’s annual look at NCAA Division I public school spending on sports, based on data from 2015 to 2016. The No. 1 school on the list is the University of Texas, which spent $171 million on its sports programs and brought in $188 million in revenue. No. 2 is Ohio State, which spent $167 million and had $171 million in revenue, and No. 3 is the University of Michigan, which spent $158 million and had revenue of $164 million. Here you can see how much all 230 universities spent. On the whole, the schools spent an average of 8.8% more on athletics-related financial aid in 2015 to 2016, compared with the year before. And they spent 5% more on coaching compensation, compared with 7.6% the year before. Other expenses that went down last year were team travel, game-day operations, as well as equipment and uniforms.
