40 S&P 500 stocks have slumped 20% or more in 2017

Shares of Advance Auto Parts have fallen 39% during 2017, through July 6.

The benchmark S&P 500 index lost 0.9% on Thursday and has pulled back 1.8% since its most recent closing high on June 19. While the numbers don’t seem alarming (the index has returned 8.8% in 2017, with dividends reinvested), the tone in the financial media has turned negative.

Don’t miss: Should you sell the U.S. stock market and buy the rest of the world?

There’s never a shortage of warnings that we may be headed into a correction (a decline of at least 10%) for the broad market, or even a bear market (a drop of at least 20%), especially more than eight years into the U.S. bull market that began in March 2009. On the other hand, the S&P 500 SPX, -0.94% over the past two years has recovered from both a 12% correction (July 20, 2015 through Aug. 25, 2015) and a 13% correction (Nov. 3, 2015 through Feb. 11, 2016).

There are actually 505 stocks in the S&P 500, because five companies have two common share classes in the index. So far in 2017, 337 S&P 500 stocks have risen (not including reinvested dividends), while 168 have fallen.

Among the 2017 losers, 40 have skidded 20% or more. With the price of West Texas intermediate crude oil CLQ7, -1.69% sliding 17% this year, you might expect energy companies to dominate the list. There are indeed 16 energy stocks among the 40. There also are 13 retailers, a sign of just how much online shopping is hurting traditional brick-and-mortar stores.
