Chinese Underground Network of Surrogates

According to CNN, there is an increasing number of American women becoming surrogates for Chinese women in an underground network of women trying to find a way to have a baby. By having Americans carry their children the Chinese have figured out a way around the strict reproduction laws in China. Despite recent reforms to the One Child laws surrogacy is still illegal. In America, it is much easier to conceive a child by surrogacy and costs around $130,000. That seems steep, but 40% of clients are Chinese.

"There are a tremendous number of medical reasons that lead people to do surrogacy," Dr. David Smotrich, a physician who has worked with hundreds of Chinese patients at several surrogacy agencies in California said.
