BlackBerry's Priv Getting Great Initial Reviews

By Scott Tzu

We think that the coming launch of BlackBerry's (NASDAQ:BBRY) Priv phone could wind up giving a substantial boost to the way the public views the company. We think this launch will exceed all expectations and all previous phone launches under John Chen's rein. We believe it makes a compelling case for being long BBRY here.

As we push forward into another quarter, there are a couple of things we are watching for with regard to BlackBerry, however none more then the release of the Priv, which is BlackBerry's new Android-based phone that will be released in the US over the next couple weeks and has already started pre-ordering in the UK.

The Priv is going to be a big deal we think, because it is the company's first real mainstream jump back into the handset business since CEO Chen has taken over. The company had released specialty models like the PassPort, but these models were not carried by all carriers, and they were designed specifically for those working in business and those already familiar with BlackBerry's operating system.

Priv is a phone "for the rest of us," to borrow some Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) verbiage.

The Priv is very different in the sense that it is going to be a mainstream phone, marketed towards retail and carried by all four major mobile carriers. This is really going to be the first phone that, if produced in mass amounts, will really help the company leverage its partnership with Foxconn. If everything goes according to plan, we should be able to see decent sales of this model at decent margins.

The Priv represents an amazing opportunity. We laid this out in one of our previous articles talking about the Android installed base, which sits at over 1 billion people. BlackBerry only wants to take a small share of this, and we believe they can.
